Expectations for an Internet Business Plan

With no internet business plan, you have no control. I’m paraphrasing something I found in a project management book, but you get the idea. If you have no plan, you have no control. And when you have no control, how can you expect to do anything? You must have a business plan of some kind.

This brings us to expectations. If you don’t set them, then you will have no measurement of success or failure. When starting a legitimate internet business, Here are some things you can expect:

1. It is hard work.
2. You won’t get rich quick.
3. You will not be writing about topics you are passionate about.
4. Expect some failures.

Part of your internet business strategy will be accepting the fact that this will indeed, be hard work. In the beginning, you can expect to work at least 8 hours a day (or less if you have a family to take care of). You’ll spend hours researching the internet to find the right keywords. You’ll spend hours writing about topics which you may know little about. You’ll spend hours learning terminology that you may not be familiar with. The beginning will be rough.

If you found this website then you’ve probably seen them before. They have ads that say “Start an online business and get rich quick!” or “Turnkey internet service business!” or “Exciting internet providers business”. 99.9% of these offers are completely bogus. If you get that gut feeling, that tells you it’s too good to be true, then you are probably right. The real, legitimate online businesses, in which people work from home are not get rich quick schemes. They are comprised of all different types of people who put a lot of time in. It is truly their job and career.

Most people who start an internet business will make their money writing about specific topics and placing relevant advertisements on their blog or website. This is how it’s done. When you write out your internet business plan, make sure you include that fact. There’s no way around it. Before you start dreaming about writing exclusively about your favorite pastime, realize this: You will spend the majority of your time writing about topics in which you know little or nothing about. Boom. There it is. It took me a while to get comfortable with this. I kept thinking, “Surely there’s a way I can write about things I know about and make a lot of money”. Well, guess again. Unless maybe you’re the guy from Jeopardy who knows everything….

Expect to fail. There will be certain topics that you will put a lot of time into, only to have little or no return. Don’t get discouraged though. There are tens of thousands of topics or niches to write about when starting an online business. Another thing to remember is that the internet is dynamic. It changes, sometimes hourly. So don’t get too hung up if one of your topics doesn’t do well.

Now let’s put this plan together.

For now, you will be creating 20 websites that zero in on one topic or keyword. These are commonly called ‘niche sites’. Each of these sites will slowly start to get traffic (naturally) and if you monitor your sites appropriately, you can make them better and better. And they will tell you exactly what site is paying and for what keywords yadda yadda yadda.

The success of your internet business will depend greatly on how closely pay attention to detail. So next time, I am going to go into a little more detail.
